Tasty traditional Croatian Poppy Seed Kolache Recipe
1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder
1/4 teaspoons of salt
1/2 cup of sugar
3 cups of all purpose flour
1/2 cup of almonds - ground
1 tablespoon of lemon peel - grated
1 cup of butter
1 large egg
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
2 tablespoon of water
1 cup of poppy seeds
1/2 cup of milk
1/4 cup of honey
1/3 cup of dates - chopped
1/3 cup of nuts - chopped
1 dash of cinnamon
1. Mix the baking powder, salt, sugar, flour, almonds, and the lemon peel. Mix in the butter. Then, add lemon juice, egg, water and flour.
2. Create a ball out of the mixture and divide into 8 parts. Take each individual part and roll-out on a lightly floured board until it is 1/2 inch thick, then slice into 4 inch squares. Filling: Mix all filling ingredients together in a pan; cook over low heat until thick, stirring often. Cool and it's ready to use. Place 1 teaspoon of poppy seed filling into the middle of each square.
3. Pinch two ends together and seal. Put on a greased baking dish and brush with milk.
4.Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes, cool and serve.
